Meteorite Fragment. (Camp del Cielo - Argentina)

Discovered in 1576 but thought to have fallen about 4000-6000 years ago. The Indian name means 'Field of the sky or heaven' The meteorite is predominantly Iron with 6.62% Nickel.

It is a course Octahedrite with silicate inclusions. In the 1770's a mass of about 15 tons was found and said to be the original 'Meson de Fierro' named by the Spanish in 1576, but it was not excavated. It is thought that the same mass was in the news in 1992 when an American dealer made a private purchase but was arrested by the Argentinean authorities when he tried to transport it. This fragment has been taken from a larger peice and tumble cleaned.
